About

All my work is done in situ, my only studio work being still lives and drawings. When I first see a view which I want to paint I select the vantage point and then plan my composition mentally. I use fast brushstrokes and sketch in the main shapes. Relying on neutral colours, the detail gradually develops. For a long time I had been wanting to do some nightscapes. When I saw the view up Lower Regent Street with the focal point of the illuminated building on Piccadilly Circus, I realised this was the challenge I'd been waiting for. The overall pallet is limited at night but the eye focuses more readily on the composition, the dramatic effect of artificial light, and the spectral shapes of figures.
In the last year I have used watercolour to a much greater extent. It is an unforgiving medium with little margin for error. As a result the thinking time before starting is greater. Unlike oil painting the most important areas are those left unpainted. It is a wonderful medium to travel with as it forces one to analyse all the characteristics of a new environment with maximum economy.
